Your License at 70

When you reach 70, your driving licence entitlement will expire. If you intend to continue driving, then you must apply to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) to renew your entitlement. There is also no fee for this application.

You will automatically be sent an application form 90 days before your 70th birthday - a D46 form if you hold a photocard driving licence or a D46P form if you still have a paper licence. You should complete the application form ensuring that all the relevant questions are answered, and then return it as soon as possible to the DVLA along with your old driving licence. If you currently have a paper licence, you will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity and a passport style colour photograph. This is not necessary if you already have a photocard licence.

If for some reason you do not receive a D46 form in the post, you can apply for renewal using a standard D1 form (Application for an ordinary driving licence).

How Long Will it Take?

Although the DVLA aim to deliver your driving licence to you within 15 working days of receiving your application, it may take them longer if they have to check on your health or personal details. However, the law allows you to drive before you receive your licence back as long as:

• you have held a GB or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
• you are not disqualified from driving
• you have not been, and would not be, refused a licence for medical reasons
• you keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence
