Before the Test

Although tyres are a common reason for failure, it is easy to check them and bring them up to standard before the MOT test. Make sure that all four road tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm showing in the pattern all the way around the tyre and over three-quarters of the width. There should be no gaps, breaks or low spots. You should also ensure that there are no splits, cracks or cuts in the tyre's sidewall. Your tyres should also be inflated to the correct pressure.

Although your spare tyre will not be checked as part of the test, it is advisable to carry a correctly inflated and legal tyre.

Although the minimum tread depth is set at 1.6 mm, it is recommended that you replace your tyres well before this legal limit is reached; at least at 2 mm and preferably at 3 mm.
