Tax Disc Exemptions

Tax Disc Exemptions

Although all vehicles that are kept or used on a public road in the UK must display a valid tax disc, some vehicles are exempt from paying a fee for the disc. These exemptions include:

  • Disabled drivers
  • Historic vehicles (those constructed before 1 January 1973)
  • Steam powered vehicles
  • Electrically propelled vehicles
  • Electrically assisted pedal cycles (the electric motor output must not exceed 0.2 kilowatts or 0.25 kilowatts for tricycles)
  • Limited use vehicles (those used solely for purposes relating to agriculture, horticulture or forestry)

Disabled Drivers

To claim exemption from car tax, you must be in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance OR you must receive the War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement. The vehicle may only be used by you or for your purposes; although another person may drive the vehicle, it must be for your requirements, for example to take you to the doctor or to do your shopping. If it is used for anyone else's own personal needs, then the appropriate rate of vehicle excise duty must be paid.

Limited Use Vehicles

Limited use vehicles include:

  • agricultural tractors
  • off road tractors
  • agricultural engines (e.g. a combine harvester)
  • light agricultural vehicles
  • agricultural lift and loading vehicles
  • mowing machines

These vehicles will only be exempt from tax if they are used on public roads solely to pass between different areas of land occupied by the same person over a distance not exceeding 1.5 kilometres.

Applying for an Exemption

You must apply to your local DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) office to initially register your vehicle as exempt. However, if you are applying for an exemption due to disability rather than vehicle class, then you may do this at your local Post office using a V10 form.
