If you decide to sell your car for scrap, you must inform the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). Selling Your Car for Scrap

If you decide to sell your car for scrap, you must inform the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).

Selling to an ATF

If your car is to be destroyed immediately, you should give the scrap dealer (officially known as an authorised treatment facility or ATF) your registration certificate and you will be issued with a certificate of destruction (CoD). If the car is not to be destroyed, you should fill in the yellow V5C/3 section of the registration certificate to transfer keepership to the ATF, and then send this to the DVLA. You should then pass the rest of the certificate (uncompleted V5C and V5C/2 (blue and green) sections) to the ATF.

Destroying the Vehicle Yourself

If you decide to break or destroy the vehicle yourself, you must notify the DVLA by completing the 'scrapped box' on the registration certificate and enter the date of scrapping.

What Happens Next

You will be liable for the vehicle until the DVLA receive notification of the scrapping or transfer of your vehicle to the ATF. You will receive an acknowledgement letter confirming the discharge of liability of your vehicle from the DVLA within about four weeks; contact the DVLA if has not arrived after this time.

Personalised Plates

If you have a personalised plate that you want to keep, you must apply to transfer or retain it before you sell or scrap your vehicle, otherwise you will lose your entitlement to that number. You should contact the DVLA for the correct procedure to enable you to do this.
