Reporting for Your Test

On the day of your driving test it is usually recommend that you have a lesson with your instructor the hour before your test. Your instructor will aim to get you to the test centre about 15 minutes early. Once at the driving test centre, you must make sure that you have the following items with you. If you do not, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

  • An appropriately licensed and insured vehicle, displaying L- Plates, suitable for the purpose of the test.
  • Your appointment letter.
  • Your theory test pass certificate (or confirmation).
  • Your provisional driving licence .
    • New style photo licences: You must bring both parts of your photo card driving licence. If you do not have the photo and the paper part, your test will not take place and you will lose your fee.
    • Old style paper licences: You must take your signed driver licence and a valid passport - no other form of photographic identification will be accepted.

If you have misplaced your licence, you can apply to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for a replacement. However, this may take up to 15 days to arrive, so you may have to be prepared to reschedule your test.

The examiner will appear, call out your name and ask you to sign against it on a form. They will also ask you to show proof of identity. You will then be asked which car is yours, after which you will proceed to the eyesight check .
