Removing Expired Endorsements

Removing Expired Endorsements

If you decide that you want to remove expired endorsements from your driving licence, then you will need to apply to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) using a D1 application form, and pay a fee of £19.00.

If You Have a Photocard Licence ...

Fill in form D1, available from Post Offices or from DVLA's form ordering service, and send it to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AB, along with your photocard licence and D740 paper counterpart, together with the appropriate fee. Alternatively, you may use the premium checking service available at various Post Office branches or local DVLA offices.

You may also inform DVLA of any changes to your name or address using this form. You must enclose original documentation confirming your new name, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, change of name deed or a legal declaration. There is no need to supply a new photograph, unless you wish to do so.

If You Have a Paper Licence ...

The DVLA no longer issues paper driving licences, and if you apply for your endorsements to be removed, then you must apply for a new photocard driving licence. You can do this by filling in a D1 application form, ensuring that all the relevant questions are answered, and providing original documentation to confirm your identity along with a passport style colour photograph and the appropriate fee. Details of how to do this can be found in Applying for a Driving Licence , along with information regarding identity documents, photograph criteria and the premium checking service.

Send your completed D1 application with your paper driving licence to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AB or you may be able to use the premium checking service.

How Long Will it Take?

Although the DVLA aim to deliver your driving licence to you within 15 working days of receiving your application, it may take them longer if they have to check on your health or personal details. However, the law allows you to drive before you receive your licence back as long as:

  • you have held a GB or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
  • you are not disqualified from driving
  • you have not been, and would not be, refused a licence for medical reasons
  • you keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence
