Endorsements and Penalty Points

If you receive penalty points on your licence, they will remain there for a specific length of time, depending on the type of offence committed. In general, endorsements will remain on your licence for four years from the date of offence, other than in the cases shown below.

1. Four Years from the Date of Conviction

  • Offences resulting in disqualification
  • Certain reckless/dangerous driving offences:
    • DD40 (Dangerous driving)
    • DD60 (Manslaughter or culpable homicide while driving a vehicle)
    • DD80 (Causing death by dangerous driving)
  • Disqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed

2. Eleven Years from the Date of Conviction

  • Certain careless driving offences:
    • CD40 (Causing death through careless driving when unfit through drink)
    • CD50 (Causing death by careless driving when unfit through drugs)
    • CD60 (Causing death by careless driving with alcohol level above the limit)
    • CD70 (Causing death by careless driving then failing to supply a specimen for analysis)
  • Certain drink or drugs offences
    • DR10 (Driving or attempting to drive with alcohol level above limit)
    • DR20 (Driving or attempting to drive while unfit through drink)
    • DR30 (Driving or attempting to drive then failing to supply a specimen for analysis)
    • DR80 (Driving or attempting to drive when unfit through drugs)

Once the endorsements have expired, you will be allowed to apply to the DVLA to remove the penalty points from your driving licence .

Disqualification

Under the 'totting up' system, you are liable to be disqualified if you receive 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years. You may also be disqualified immediately for other offences, such as alcohol related offences.

Drivers who are disqualified from holding a driving licence in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man are also disqualified from driving, holding or obtaining a driving licence in any one of those three countries.

When your period of disqualification is over, then you will be permitted to re-apply for your driving licence .
