Car Maintenance Schedule

There are a number of quick and simple jobs you can do to keep your car regularly maintained; most of the checks and services can be done at little or no cost, and will save you time, money and inconvenience in the future. Here's a rundown of what you need to do and when to do it. You can also click on the associated links to find out how to carry out the task.

Every Week

  • Wash and clean your car , paying particular attention to the windows, lights and door mirrors. Cleaning your car is even more important during the winter; the salt on the roads can damage paintwork and help rust to set in.
  • Check the engine oil level and add more if needed.
  • Inspect your tyres for damage, air pressure and wear.
  • Check the windscreen washer fluid is full.
  • Look at the windscreen wiper blades ; are they in good order?
  • Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
  • Check that the brakes are working correctly.
  • Check the coolant level ; top up if needed.
  • Make sure that all your lights work correctly.

Every Month

  • Check transmission fluid .
  • Inspect belts and hoses .
  • Check the level of power steering fluid.

Every Other Month

  • Inspect the air filter ; change if necessary.

Every 3,000 miles

  • Change oil and replace oil filter .
  • Check the battery .

Every 6,000 miles

  • Have your tyres rotated.
  • Check the brake system thoroughly, including the brake pads, brake linings, hand brake and lines and hoses.

Every Year

  • Replace windscreen and rear window wiper blades .
  • Change the air filter .
